You might easily be misled by the broad title, and even the traditional looking cover image of this particular book, to believe that Christianity in Stained Glass is merely a faithful celebration of an awesome window array, and therefore, nothing out of the ordinary. But don’t be misled; this book is a one-off and a collector’s item.The first stand out is the book’s production value—the quality of which is impossible to appreciate in the flatland of digital iterations. As a glass specialist and historian, I have paged through every significant stained glass book imaginable for several decades. Very little photographed prior to the digital age does any justice to the finicky medium of stained glass, which, after all, uses light itself as a medium. Frankly, this book is a triumph of both digital photography and reproduction.
When there is a difference in hue, or a window at an angle, you can be sure that the author wanted you to see it that way. The palette trips through the hallucinogenic extremes of the High Victorian age, into contemporized Chartres blues and reds. Aficionados of glass will immediately be able to identify the streaky English glasses and idiosyncratic German bubbled and rippled blown glasses, as well as the impossibly bright English or French gold pinks (made with gold, therefore, top-of-the-line expensive).
And then there is the content. Admittedly, the book is all about the windows in Grosse Pointe’s Memorial Church, but it is much, much more than this. It covers three generations of style from the Willet Studio of Philadelphia, one of the most significant American glass studios—far exceeding the scope of Tiffany--founded in 1899. The firm moved on to modern collaborations with Ben Shahn, in faceted dalle de verre or non-leaded Farbigem, but this presentation lays out Willet’s entire figural, representational style.
In addition to crisp and sparkling photographic reproductions, this publication is driven by the author’s particular passions as a biblical scholar, minister, and theological historian with a profound and vibrant dedication to creativity and the arts. She gave generously of her time and energy to produce the book exactly as she envisioned it. It is an exegetical tour de force, with supplementary explanations of biblical passages, poems, sermonettes inspired by the windows, canticles, and reflections. Professor Kogel’s detective work about the Willet family business, and serendipitous collaborations with a village of cohorts (including a close communion with third generation glass manufacturer Crosby Willet) have woven together a text, much like a stained glass window, that consists of many facets and hues, in the best and widest sense of the liberal arts. It’s also arrived just in time for Christmas, and given its production values, at a bargain price!

Dr. Kogel has created a one of a kind book for the ages. The quality of the photography and accompanying narrative makes this an instant classic. A remarkable achievement.
This magnificent book needs to be consumed slowly because it invades one's soul. The outstanding quality of the printing and the moving commentary turn this work into a priceless work of art. The pictures come alive as if one is truly there looking at the stained glass in its original setting. When Rev. Dr. Kogel shares with the reader her insightful analysis of the stained glass visions, you realize why you have been so moved by the view. She quotes Moses " I will turn aside and see this great sight" That is what happens when the reader turns each page. Truly a masterpiece. a labour of love of which the reader will never tire.

So many Sunday mornings I have come to church when the sun is shining on some of the windows and wished I knew the story behind them. With her photos the sun is shining thru every window and I can pick up my book and learn the theological background. The quality of the photography bursts off the pages while the scholarly text gives deep meaning to each window. A book for anyone wanting to know the history of Christianity.

I will not rock the proverbial boat on this one. Gorgeous book. Printed in USA, too! Photos are magnificent. If you are a Christian, or at least friendly to Christian ideals and values, you will like this book. Great descriptions of the beautiful windows of this gorgeous church built, undoubtedly, with lots of Detroit auto bucks! She throws in appropriate Scripture to accompany the windows, too. Great read. Very informative and enlightening. Take the time.
